PSU Faculty-Led Costa Rica: Grecia - Cultural and Language Immersion for Social Workers in Costa Rica (Outgoing Program) Featured

This program offers a two week course of cultural and Spanish language immersion for social workers in Costa Rica (course A) with an optional extended stay for independent study and volunteer experience (Course B). The course is designed for graduate students, but is available to Bachelors in Social Work (BSW) students with consent of instructor and the BSW Program Director. Course A (Required):
The Cultural and Spanish Language Immersion for Social Workers class is a two-week course offered with home stays in Grecia, Costa Rica. The academic content includes daily Spanish classes in the morning and afternoon lectures about Latino culture, Central American social services, and the social work profession in Costa Rica compared and contrasted with the United States. There are several field trips to various social service organizations around the central region of Costa Rica.
Course B (optional extended stay):
The optional extended stay will be available for two additional credits that students will register for as an independent study SW 505 Readings and Conference course. During this additional week, students will participate in additional Spanish classes in the morning with visits to agencies and volunteer work within the local community in the afternoons.

Course & Credit Information
Participants will be required to participate in pre-departure course meetings and a pre-departure orientation (exact dates and times TBD). Additionally, participants are required to participate in a post-trip course meeting (exact date and time TBD). Participants will earn the following 3 credits of SW 514: Cultural & Spanish Language Immersion (Course A) with the option of an additional 2 credits of 505 Independent Study & volunteer Experience for those who choose to optional extended stay (Course B).
Daily activities for the course include morning Spanish classes and afternoon agency visits and volunteer work. Visits with agencies may include a domestic violence program, a children's shelter, and a community outreach program. Guest lectures are from the Social Work Department at the University of Costa Rica.
