Program Description:

STFL Spain Zamora CapProgram Overview

This service learning experience is designed to immerse students in Spanish culture and society by collaborating with a nonprofit social service based organization in the province of Zamora, in the region of Castilla y León, Spain. Students will lead or assist small groups of at risk young adults (ages 13-17) in organized activities.  They will also collaborate with the service site to better existing programs and help create new activities as directed by the community partner.

Potential classes that students will assist or lead:

  • Structured educational workshops: pre-labor skills, interviewing skills, English classes, grammar classes and other formative classes.

  • Art and Craft classes that produce products that the participant can sell during the seasonal fairs that are common in the community.

  • Recreational classes and outings for stress relief and team building.

  • Cultural outings- to learn more about history and culture.

This capstone course is four weeks long in Zamora, Spain. There will be four mandatory pre-departure meetings held during the spring term and early summer to begin work related to the final project. While in Zamora, students will have regular scheduled classes to prepare and later reflect on the Service Learning experience. Students will be paired with a local language partner and will have regular meetings to practice Spanish. Students will reside with host families in the community. Weekends will be free.
