GEO: Global Health, Development, and Service Learning in Accra
(Outgoing Program)
** Application materials may be reviewed prior to the program's application deadline. (Please note: if all of your boxes are checked-off, your application is complete.) In most cases, for applicants applying to programs led by PSU faculty, interviews and final selection will take place after the program deadline.
The Aya Centre, the home base of this program, is located in Accra, Ghana’s capital and largest city with a population well over 2 million. By living in Accra, students can experience the contrast of life in this bustling city. From the colorful Makola Market to the quiet streets of Cantonments, you will soon appreciate the warm friendliness of Ghanaian people. Getting to know the people of Ghana is one of the best opportunities for students to learn about the complexities of the African continent.
Program Focus
Discover first-hand the complexities of ethnic, economic and gender identities related to assisting local communities to take charge of their own destinies. Participate in, contribute to, and write a final report based on community service in a local non-governmental organization or other community service organization. Students study sociology, history, political science, economics, and cultural studies in a highly interdisciplinary program. You are enrolled in courses at the Aya Centre designed exclusively for students on the GEO Ghana Program. Instructors are local Ghanaian professors. You will enroll in three courses in addition to supervised participation in a community service learning project/internship.
Application Fee:
All applications include a $50 non-refundable fee due on the application deadline. Students who do not intend to complete a program application are required to withdraw before the deadline, otherwise, the $50 application fee will
be assessed to the students' account.
