Program Description:

Program OverviewCIEE Beijing Advanced Chinese

As the capital of the world’s most populous nation, Beijing is at the center of much that happens in China. It is a city of over 15 million people struggling to adapt as China emerges as a global player. As a political center, bureaucracy is widespread. Changes in Beijing have moved quickly, and the city continues to grow. Beijing also reflects China's long and evolving history when different dynasties were based there and constructed some of the nation’s most well-known and culturally important sites such as the Great Wall and the Summer Palace.

Program Focus

Are you interested in using your superior level of Chinese to study international affairs, business, history, or Chinese literature alongside Chinese students? Are you hoping to work in China following your college experience? Then this program is for you. The Advanced Chinese Studies program offered at the CIEE Study Center at Peking University supports students in enrolling in one of four schools or departments both administratively and intellectually. You’ll learn about important topics in Chinese from a Chinese perspective, while developing professional writing and research skills in Chinese.

The Advanced Chinese Studies program is for highly motivated, superior level (by ACTFL standards) Chinese language students. Students take classes in Chinese with local Chinese undergraduate students and agree to speak only Mandarin to encourage language and cultural acquisition. During the application process, students must submit an individual study plan to indicate which school or department at PKU they plan on enrolling in and listen to online sample lectures.
