Program Overview

CIEE Beijing Advanced Chinese

As the capital of the world’s most populous nation, Beijing is at the center of much that happens in China. It is a city of 11 million people struggling to adapt as China emerges as a global player. As a political center, bureaucracy is widespread. Changes in Beijing have moved at an incredible rate, and the city continues to grow physically. However, Beijing also reflects China's long and evolving history when different dynasties were based there and constructed some of the nation’s most well-known and culturally important sites such as the Great Wall and the Summer Palace.

Program Focus

The CIEE Study Center at Peking University is one of the oldest and most recognized intensive Chinese language programs. The Peking University Center for Teaching Chinese houses over eight different language levels and many other elective courses that benefit the specific needs of each student. Intensive language courses coupled with individual language tutorials, diversified field trips, modern housing facilities, and experienced on-site staff, make the CIEE Study Center in Beijing an incredible place to study and learn cross-cultural skills under the auspices of the most famous university in China.

CIEE’s Intensive Chinese Language program is designed to help students improve fluency in spoken and written Mandarin through intensive language training. Students can also take one course instructed in English to enrich their understanding of China. Before the start of the program, students must have at least two semesters of college-level Chinese or equivalent, and one college-level Chinese area studies course is recommended. Chinese language courses and Chinese language electives are taught by faculty from the School of Teaching Chinese as the Second Language, Peking University. Area studies electives are taught by CIEE faculty, other local Chinese scholars, and/or international scholars residing in Beijing.
