Program Description:

Program OverviewIndia

This graduate level course will focus on service-learning in the context of educational, governmental and non-profit organizations in India.  Students will explore through participation and academic research the logistical and theoretical issues of short-term international service-learning.  Engagement in service-learning in Madurai, India  in partnership with Lady Doak College will allow for application, analysis, and reflection of course concepts within contemporary challenges of Indian social, class, religious, gender, education, health, environmental, and political contexts.

This course will also examine the challenges and opportunities of international service-learning and partnerships between academic institutions and community-based organizations.  Implications of service-learning for students, partners, and the community will be examined in light of civic engagement, social justice, and social change.  The course will also explore the deep roots of Indian society from socio-economic and cultural perspectives with an emphasis on women's issues and introduce participants to Indian art, architecture, festivals, industry and history through formal lectures, visits to various service sites, and field work.
