Program Description:

Vietnam_Global Village 3Program Overview

Through a collaboration between Hiroshima Jogakuin University (HJU), DaNang University, the Sarus Program and the Cu Lao Cham Marine Protected Area, students will have a unique, hands-on field experience opportunity in central Vietnam. Participants will be introduced to local traditions and culture, development initiatives, as well as urban and rural environments. Specifically, we will examine the connections between urban and rural communities that are essential to maintain local livelihoods and healthy ecosystems. The curriculum and field experiences are designed around the asset-based community development model.

Students will have a unique opportunity to experience and explore central Vietnam with local government agencies, NGO's and fellow students from Japan, Cambodia, Vietnam and the U.S. Together we will investigate local challenges and learn some basic fundamentals that are necessary for community-based international development. Along the way students from HJU and DaNang University will participate in a volunteer project, stay with a local fisherman and their family, and develop an idea for a locally based project as a result of their observations throughout the week. Global Village Field Experience will not only give students an inside perspective into local organizations, but it will also expose them to the field of international development.
