Program Description:

AHA DublinThe Education Abroad Scholarships are designed to provide awards for Portland State University undergraduate and graduate students going on credit-bearing programs through the PSU Education Abroad office. These scholarships are intended to:

  • assist students in easing the financial burden of studying abroad
  • grant students equal access to an opportunity for financial assistance

Applications for PSU Education Abroad scholarships are competitive. Students should be aware that PSU’s Education Abroad scholarships are not designed to completely fund your program. We encourage you to use the resources we’ve designed to create a realistic funding plan that includes Education Abroad scholarships among other funding sources. Students can apply for and be awarded multiple scholarships with the same application cycle with the exception of the Financial Need Scholarships (see below for details). Students must be accepted to an approved PSU Education Abroad program to receive funding.

Application Requirements

There are several aspects to a PSU Education Abroad Scholarship application. You will be asked to write two essays, a Statement of Purpose & a Statement of Diversity. If awarded, the funds must be applied to the education abroad program you applied for and cannot be used towards a future program.

Statement of Purpose:

Please describe the program to which you are applying. Include details regarding how the various aspects of the program (academics, co-curricular, or other program details) will enhance your PSU education. Address any academic, career, and/or personal goals that were part of your decision to choose this particular study abroad program, and expand on one or more of them. Discuss how this experience will help you reach your goals (academic, personal, career, intellectual, etc). Limit your answer to 500 words.

Statement of Diversity:

How has your identity influenced your decision to learn abroad? How do you anticipate your experiences, including barriers you’re working to overcome, will impact and prepare you for your learning abroad program? Limit your answer to 500 words.

What is the scholarship committee looking for?

  • Connecting Motivations: Applicant should thoughtfully, eloquently, and clearly demonstrate why specific program features are meaningful to their goal(s).
  • Feasibility & Intellectual Learning: Applicant should demonstrate that the goal(s) they hope to achieve are thoroughly achievable within the duration of their time abroad. Applicant should supply supporting arguments that articulate how specific activities in the program will foster intellectual learning.
  • Statement of Diversity: Applicant thoughtfully, eloquently, and clearly demonstrates how identity has influenced their decision to learn abroad and how it may impact or prepare them for the experience abroad. Applicant uses supporting argument(s) to compellingly articulate points.
  • Grammar, Punctuation & Organization: Essays are organized in a logical manner and do not contain incomplete sentences nor grammatical errors.

Financial Need Scholarships

Applicants will be asked if they would like to be considered for Financial Need Scholarships: the Ketcheson Scholars Award & the PSU Travel Grant. You must be receiving financial aid during the time of application to be considered. Students can only be awarded one of these scholarships, they cannot be awarded both.
