Customize your study abroad experience. Our Open Campus program at the CIEE Global Institute - London offers maximum flexibility to engage and experience the city in your own way. Match the academic experience with your interests, aspirations, and degree requirements: Take one, two, or three six-week blocks for your perfect amount of intensive study and cultural engagement, select your academic track from five options; then choose from a wide range of courses and subject areas.
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, The Tate Modern, Buckingham Palace - there is no shortage of must-see attractions in the capital of the United Kingdom. More than 300 languages are spoken in London, making it the most linguistically and culturally diverse city in the world. Experience it for yourself as you explore the music, fashion, theater, and comedy scenes in London as well as the huge variety of markets, and museums - not to mention the abundance of green space in and around London.
Stay in London for the duration of this unique study abroad experience, or add-on blocks in other CIEE Open Campus locations (Berlin, Cape Town, Madrid, Paris, or Rome) to experience more intercultural learning with CIEE's unique Global Scholar program. Students may select one of five academic tracks: Language, Literature & Culture; Business; Communications, Journalism & New Media; Global & Community Health; or International Relations & Political Science.
The CIEE Global Institute is located in the heart of Bloomsbury close to prestigious universities, cultural institutions and historic landmarks. Located facing Russell Square, the CIEE Global Institute provides easy access to all points in London.
Faculty from local research organizations, educational institutions, and visiting faculty from around the world teach CIEE courses. Students studying in London for all three academic blocks have the option to enroll directly in a course at the University of Westminster.
Courses taught at the CIEE Global Institute are typically for CIEE students only. Classes are scheduled Monday-Friday and meet either two or three times per week, and attendance is strictly enforced both for classes and required co-curricular excursions. Students should expect an average of two hours of preparation required for each hour in class. Instruction is supported and augmented online by our learning management system, Canvas. Direct-enrollment courses at local universities are attended by British and other international students.
The U.S. grading scale of A-F is used. Students are graded on the basis of attendance, class participation, homework, individual project work, presentations, and mid-term and final examinations. Learning outcomes assessment is continuous through personal reflections, evaluation feedback, self-assessment, and requirements as set out in course syllabi.
Each six-week course is a full semester in content, so the pace is accelerated and the workload is demanding. CIEE courses are designed to follow U.S. academic culture and standards. The class environment typically features a combination of traditional lecture and discussion with co-curricular excursions and activities. Heavy emphasis is placed on student participation. To avoid falling behind, students should not plan personal travel out of London when classes are in session and plan trips for the long weekends in between blocks.
