Program Description:
Practitioners are invited to attend this one-week study abroad course, June 21–27th, to earn 36 AICP credits. Curriculum will compare U.S. and Netherlands problems, priorities and solutions with specific emphasis on design and engineering principles. Leading engineers and designers responsible for creating and maintaining the Netherlands' world-class bikeway system will teach the Dutch approach to bike and pedestrian planning and design through an intensive week of classroom sessions and tours.

The instruction and interaction with other participants will bring you up to speed on innovative practice and research and teach you the skills and techniques you need to start incorporating Dutch principles into your next project, and adapting them for a North American context. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: Select the appropriate bicycle facility design based on urban form, traffic conditions and multimodal context Identify various options for treating intersections that incorporate bicycle facilities Network with international experts from the various facets of bikeway design Leverage land uses to better support active transportation Feel rejuvenated and excited to go back to work and make an impact!

  • Completion of the PSU non-degree seeking admissions process:
    1. Go to Portland State University's online application system and create a login and password. (Remember to write down your info so you can access your application later.)
    2. Select ONE of the Non-Degree options from the drop-down menu: Non-Degree Undergraduate (if you do not have a bachelor's degree) or Non-Degree Graduate (if you do have a bachelor's degree)
    3. With your application you must submit a non-refundable $25 application fee; you will be required to pay this via Visa or MasterCard. A $2.00 processing fee will apply. 
    4. Keep your browser window open after you submit to view your welcome message, including your PSU ID number.

*Application Fee: All applications include a $50 non-refundable fee due on the application deadline. Students who do not intend to complete a program application are required to withdraw before the deadline, otherwise, the $50 application fee will be assessed to the students' account.
