Program Description:

Program Overview CIEE Berlin Architecture

Berlin is a living sourcebook of architectural styles where students encounter buildings spanning centuries of German design and engineering. No city in Europe has undergone more rapid and dramatic physical change as Berlin, rising from the ashes of WWII and healing the scars left by The Wall. This urban landscape is full of deep and striking contrasts shaped by forces of good and evil, democracy and tyranny, creation and destruction.

Here you will encounter early vernacular styles, imperial palaces and Victorian opulence, industrial designs and worker tenements, modernist streamlining and Bauhaus ideals, forceful fascist facades and communist social realism. You will also find high-tech contemporary structures influenced by domestic and foreign capital investment, state-of-the-art design techniques, and the latest environmental sustainability measures. Come to Berlin to witness this city of grand ideas rendered into stone, steel, and glass. Come and understand the German architectural tradition and experience.

Program Focus

This program is especially suited for students majoring in architecture, design, engineering, urban planning and/or landscape studies with interests in Germany and studio-based project work that requires creativity, problem solving, teamwork and close attention to detail.

The origins of the Universität der Künste Berlin, UdK (Berlin University of the Arts) date back to 1696. The university has four colleges specializing in Fine Arts; Architecture, Media and Design; Music; and the Performing Arts that serve about 3,000 students. The UdK has introduced trend-setting pedagogical changes allowing for interdisciplinary approaches to study and problem solving, experimentation, and intuition. Students focus on theory and history, image and space, planning and design, construction, and technology. Much of the work centers on projects and experimentation is encouraged.
