Program Description:

Program OverviewCarpe Diem East Africa Uganda

Volunteer service in various locations in the Sub-Sahara nations of Uganda and Tanzania provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore a part of the world that is rich with history and tradition. Experience the contradiction of impoverished groups residing in lush landscapes. Go on safari to the Ngorogoro Crater and other famous landmarks in Tanzania and Uganda including Lake Victoria, Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and the many national parks that offer the opportunity to see lions, elephants, and wildebeests. There is also an opportunity to participate in a spice tour and feast on seafood in Zanzibar. More than any other, this semester is rooted in diverse volunteer opportunities that all involve "getting your hands dirty" while loving every minute of it.

Program Focus

The Africa semester is ideal for Freshman and Sophomore-level students looking to gain international experience in Africa. It boasts rich opportunities for living and working alongside like-minded individuals and organizations committed to the empowerment of local communities in Uganda and Tanzania:

  • Participate in environmental conservation efforts
  • Build houses or schools for needy communities
  • Practice Swahili while living it through interaction with homestay families and in local communities
  • Learn about growing and picking fair trade coffee on an interfaith coffee cooperative
  • Work with an organization that has dedicated itself to the education and care of HIV+ orphans
  • Help a well-established set of medical clinics with some vital logistical details.
